Introducing the Atlantic MedTech Cluster – Five Key Questions Answered

1. What is the Atlantic MedTech Cluster?

The Atlantic MedTech Cluster is made up of eight indigenous and innovative Irish companies who specialise in providing products and services to the MedTech industry. Each of the companies is based in the North West of Ireland. Collectively, the Cluster has a client base throughout Ireland, the UK, mainland Europe, and beyond.

In numbers:

  • The eight Atlantic MedTech Cluster members collectively employ almost 300 people
  • The Cluster members serve 282 customers between them
  • That list of customers includes 17 of the top 20 MedTech companies in the world

The Atlantic MedTech Cluster is part of the Enterprise Ireland Cluster Programme. In fact, it was one of the first Clusters to form under the programme.

2. How significant is the North West of Ireland to the Irish and global MedTech sector?

The North West of Ireland is a critical region for the MedTech industry in Ireland. It employees thousands of people and exports medical devices to countries around the world.

The medical device manufacturers in the North West of Ireland include indigenous Irish companies as well as global corporations like Abbot.

Andrew Hodson is the Managing Director of Atlantic MedTech Cluster member Verus Metrology Partners. He said: “This region has always been a leader in the MedTech field and we as a group are committed to creating a world-class MedTech centre of excellence here in Ireland.”

Keith Moran, Managing Director of Atlantic MedTech Cluster member SL Controls, added the Cluster “will grow the sector further, creating new jobs and opportunities”.

3. What are the aims of the Atlantic MedTech Cluster?

  • Promote the North West of Ireland to the medical device manufacturing industry worldwide
  • Provide the medical device industry with fast access to specialist, MedTech-focused, and innovative service providers
  • Create opportunities for collaboration to drive efficiencies in project delivery
  • Promote the North West of Ireland as the ideal location for MedTech industry professionals to live and grow their careers. This includes engineers as well as quality, validation, Industry 4.0, robotics, and manufacturing specialists.

The focus of the Atlantic MedTech Cluster is promoting this fantastic region of Ireland, promoting the medical device industry in the country overall, and helping to develop the talent we need to ensure we continue to drive growth in the sector and the region.

The success of the MedTech sector to-date in the North West of Ireland is impressive. That is only set to grow further given the fantastic advantages the region has to offer. These advantages include access to highly skilled individuals and the excellent relationships we have with local educational institutions.

The region also boasts forward-thinking and innovative companies in the Med-Tech sector giving us an already established and growing MedTech ecosystem in the North West.

Plus, the quality of life in the North West is excellent too, we have great transport and communication infrastructures, and the people are committed, friendly, and hard-working. Ireland’s North West truly is a centre of excellence for the MedTech industry.
